"Poverty is brutal, and it is crushing. It doesn’t care who you are; it doesn’t care where you started. "
I had the honor of being a part of the Poverty Simulation hosted here in Redmond back on May 20th, and I was lucky enough to be partnered with Carly Keenan of KTVZ News. I cannot stress enough that this is not just a simulation, but it is real life for so many people. Our friends, family, and neighbors are navigating through very similar challenges we faced in this exercise. It was not only eye-opening, but it also solidified my belief that we as a community MUST work to find real results to help our people.
I was featured in the story. Check out the video to see a familiar face️ :), and to see a walk-thru of Carly and my scenario.
“I think [the simulation is] really informative. I think it’s helpful. I think that a lot of people don’t realize how difficult it is to just try to navigate the system. Not knowing what resources are available to you is hard enough, but then having to jump through all of the hoops to try and find the resources that are available becomes a full-time job. Poverty is brutal, and it is crushing. It doesn’t care who you are; it doesn’t care where you started.
We’ve got to try to find a better system to help these folks navigate through the world that they live in, and try to help them move…”
